SEC vs. Big 12 Kicks Off in Arlington
February marks tournament season, and the Shriners Children’s College Showdown returns to Globe Life Field in Arlington. This six-team field features three SEC programs, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt, heading to the Lone Star State.

The SEC trio won’t face each other. Instead, each takes on Big 12 opponents Oklahoma State, TCU, and Texas Tech. Weekend matchups are:

TCU made the College World Series in 2023, but that’s the only time it advanced past a regional in eight seasons. Under Jim Schlossnagle, the program reached the CWS four straight times from 2014-17. Now in year five under Kirk Saarloos, TCU (39-20 in 2025) brings a solid transfer portal class.

Oklahoma State has reached a regional in 12 of the last 14 seasons under Josh Holliday, but has only advanced to three Super Regionals and one CWS. Last year, OSU went 30-25 and fell in the Athens Regional, hungry to return to the glory of the 1980s and 90s.

Texas Tech missed consecutive postseasons for the first time since 2012-13, finishing 20-33 in 2025, the program’s worst record since 1985. Tim Tadlock has overhauled the pitching staff, bringing in former Rockies pitching coach Steve Foster and pitching development director Steve Merriman.

SEC teams bring more firepower. Arkansas enters with high expectations after a heartbreaking CWS exit. Vanderbilt won 43 games last year but was eliminated in a dramatic regional. Oklahoma made a regional in its first SEC season and secured an impressive portal class.

Georgia Reloads: Top-Ranked Portal Class
Georgia has won 43 games in each of Wes Johnson’s first two seasons in Athens. The 2025 Bulldogs crushed 144 home runs, leading the nation, and looked unstoppable for much of the season. But despite the explosive offense, a recurring flaw kept them from thoroughly dominating.

The UGA pitching staff frequently dug early holes. While the bats often bailed the team out, the margin for error was thin. Only one of the 14 pitchers who threw 19+ innings finished with a sub-3.50 ERA, though arms like Brian Curley stepped up late in the season.

To address this, Johnson and his staff signed the nation’s top transfer portal class, adding elite pitching talent. Right-handers Joey Volchko (Stanford), Caden Aoki (USC), Dylan Vigue (Michigan), and Matt Scott (Stanford) all ranked among the top 50 portal arms, with Volchko and Scott topping the list.

Offensively, Georgia must replace significant production. Of last year’s eight players who started 40+ games, only Tre Phelps and Kolby Branch return. Two-way players Bryce Calloway (New Orleans) and Kenny Ishikawa (Seattle), plus catcher Jack Arcamone (Richmond), will be counted on to fill the gaps.

The Bulldogs open 2026 against Wright State, an SEC non-conference staple and Horizon League powerhouse. The Raiders have won six straight regular-season titles and reached a regional in four of the past five seasons. While WSU has yet to reach a Super Regional, it consistently fields tough, competitive teams, including a regional upset over No. 1 seed Vanderbilt in 2025.

Wright State frequently tests SEC programs, having won series in Knoxville against Tennessee in 2020, though it was swept last season at Auburn and Ole Miss. With the Bulldogs welcoming top portal arms, the 2026 season promises a new look in Athens, but expectations remain sky-high.
Brian O’Connor Era Kicks Off at Mississippi State
Mississippi State’s Chris Lemonis era came to an abrupt end last spring after seven seasons, following two missed postseasons and early regional exits since the Bulldogs’ 2021 national title.

The coaching search concluded in June with a splash: legendary Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was hired to lead the program. The Hall of Famer immediately brought in an excellent transfer portal class, assembling a roster that has fans buzzing for Dudy Noble Field showdowns all season.

Five transfers followed O’Connor from UVA, highlighted by left-hander Tomas Valincius and outfielder Aidan Teel. Valincius, arguably the top arm in the portal, posted a 70-17 K/BB ratio last season and is expected to anchor the weekend rotation. Teel brings impact at the plate, driving in 40 runs while often leading off for Virginia. Other notable additions include shortstop Drew Wyers (Bryant), catcher Kevin Milewski (Seton Hall), and right-hander Tyler Pitzer (South Carolina).

Returning talent includes a lineup that hit .304 as a team last season, tied for second in the SEC. Key contributors like Ace Reese (.352), Noah Sullivan (.345), Gehrig Frei (.345), Bryce Chance (.332), and Gatlin Sanders (.317) are back. Freshman lefty Jack Bauer, who flipped his commitment from UVA to State, is also poised to make an immediate impact.

The Bulldogs will open the O’Connor era against Hofstra. The Pride made their first regional appearance in 2022 under fifth-year head coach Frank Catalanotto, but will be without star infielder Dylan Palmer (.400 avg, MLB draftee). Hofstra has historically struggled in CAA play, posting winning records just twice since 2002.

Mississippi State’s roster now blends experienced SEC talent with elite portal additions, setting the stage for a high-stakes debut under O’Connor.
Kentucky Opens on the Road with Eyes on SEC Success
Under tenth-year head coach Nick Mingione, Kentucky baseball has made a road trip the kickoff for every season, and 2026 is no different. The Wildcats will travel to UNC Greensboro for a SoCon-SEC clash, facing a Spartans squad coming off a 21-33 season. Led by third-year coach Cody Ellis, UNCG has made four regional appearances in its 35-year history, most recently in 2022. Outfielder Brantley Truitt (.318/.409/.442) returns to anchor the lineup.

Kentucky thrives on early-season challenges. Last year, the Cats split an opening series at Lipscomb before sweeping Belmont the following weekend. Their last opening-series loss came in 2020 at TCU. This year, the program is eager to recapture the magic of its first College World Series trip just two seasons ago.

The Wildcats are bolstered by impactful mid-major transfers, including outfielders Scott Campbell (USC Upstate) and Jayce Tharnish (St. Bonaventure), infielder Tyler Cerny (Indiana), and right-hander Jack Bennett (Western Kentucky).

Returning core players provides stability. Star shortstop Tyler Bell and second baseman Luke Lawrence lead the lineup, while LHP Ben Cleaver and RHP Nate Harris anchor the rotation. After Greensboro, UK heads to Evansville for another road series before opening at home against St. John’s in late February.

With a blend of experience and new talent, Kentucky aims to return to the top of the SEC.
Florida Navigates Offseason Turmoil Ahead of Season Opener
Florida faced an unexpected shakeup this offseason when longtime head coach Kevin O’Sullivan took a personal leave in October, returning to the program on Dec. 17. During his absence, interim coach Chuck Jeroloman departed for Tennessee to join new head coach Josh Elander, and former Auburn head coach Tom Slater stepped in to lead the Gators until O’Sullivan’s return.

The roster also suffered a setback when Jacksonville transfer outfielder Jaden Bastian went down with a leg fracture. Despite the turbulence, Florida remains loaded with talent and is determined to compete at the top of the SEC once more.

The Gators open the season against UAB, a program that hasn’t posted a winning record since 2022, giving Florida a chance to start the year on the right foot.
LSU Opens Season Against Milwaukee with High Expectations
It’s the usual story with LSU. The defending national champions return key contributors and have bolstered their roster with a highly ranked transfer portal class. Under Jay Johnson, the Tigers have captured two College World Series titles and built a powerhouse program that consistently ranks among the SEC’s elite.

Expectations are sky-high in Baton Rouge, and for good reason, LSU rarely disappoints. Opening the season at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers will face Milwaukee, a team that won 24 games last year and hasn’t reached a regional since 2010. While the Panthers may have their work cut out for them, LSU looks poised to pick up right where it left off.
Tennessee Begins New Era Against Nicholls
Tennessee faced a major offseason shakeup when head coach Tony Vitello departed for the San Francisco Giants. Despite losing one of college baseball’s top coaches, the Vols remain in strong shape for 2026. Athletic Director Danny White quickly promoted associate head coach Josh Elander, Vitello’s longtime assistant, to lead the program, aiming to maintain the culture and momentum established since 2018.

The Vols open the season at Lindsey Nelson Stadium against Nicholls. The Colonels made back-to-back regional appearances in 2023-24 but struggled last year, finishing with just 17 wins. While it’s a new era in Knoxville, expectations remain high as Tennessee looks to continue competing at the top of the SEC.
